Madrid Cycle April 08
A 5 day cycle through medieval villages, a visit to a world heritage site and a day in Madrid. Flights £60, bikes £60 accommodation £30 max a night. . Real Madrid at home 27th and play Barcelona on 7th May. Madrid tempertures are expected to be about 22 degrees but will be cold in mountains.
Day 1+2 Edinburgh to Madrid Sat 26th +Sun
Easyjet £30 flight leaves Edinburgh at 17:05 arrive Madrid 21:15. Madrid has 100,000 bars one for every 100 people. Booked into Hostal La Macarena for €189 a night in centre of Madrid right off Plaza mayor (main square). This hotel will keep our bags while we cycle for 5 days. Day 3 Cercedilla to Segovia 20 miles Mon 28th
Pick up bikes from Bravobikes. Train to Cercedilla. Travel to Segovia via old Roman road over mountain range. First 12 km 600m uphill as terrain guide shows . Visit a 2000 year old Roman aqueduct, a fairytale castle, a 14th century cathedral and more in this Spanish city 90 km north of Madrid. We try some of the local cuisine such "Patatas revolconas" (a potato dish with bacon, paprika, peppers and onions) and the garlic soups. Booked to stay in Hotel Sirenas in centre of town for €132.
Day 4 Segovia to Arevalo 50 miles Tue
Ride across Castillain plains, through a pine forest, sleepy villages and a visit to Coca castle. Arrive medieval town of Arévalo. Local delicacy is cochinillo ( suckling pig) which we will try in the evening over a glass of wine. Visit churches of La Lugareja (just outside village), San Martin and Santa Maria all of which are notable from the point of view of Mudejar Art . The village itself is quite interesting as it has changed little since the 17th century. Only three hotels in this small town and we will stay in Hotel Fray Juan Gil at €55 a room , breakfast €4.
Day 5 Arevalo to Ávila 54 miles Wed
Lunch in Madrigal de las Altas Torres another medieval town. In the afternoon we arrive in Avila the provincial capital and a world heritage site with its city walls and many religious buildings. Excellent roasts and the famous veal T-bone steak are famous here as well as cakes and pastries, especially the renowned "yemas de Santa Teresa" (a sweet made with egg yolk and sugar). Booked to stay in converted synagogue Hospederia de La Sinagoga for €164 in the heart of the city next to Cathedral. This is the fourth best rated hotel in Avila.
Day 6 Avila to Cebreros 20 miles Thu 1st May
Skirt main roads to cycle through mountains to Cerebos where the ESA have a deep space telescope . Possible visit to this. Booked to stay in Hotel Dracos for €145 a night.
Day 7 Cebreros to El Escorial 30 miles Fri 2 May
El Escorial is the burial place of the kings of Spain and the site we should see here is the monastry. Get Bravo bikes to pick us up and take us back to Madrid. Booked into Hostal La Macarena for €189 a night in centre of Madrid right off Plaza mayor (main square).
Day 8 Madrid Sat 3 May
